The perfect place to celebrate Neutron in Europe

♦ Grenoble – An international research and inovation ecosystem ♦

Grenoble is a leading European hub for research and innovation, bringing together academic excellence and cutting-edge technology.

At the heart of this dynamic ecosystem is the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), ranked among the top French universities for scientific output. The European Photon and Neutron (EPN) Science Campus hosts major international facilities including the ESRF, ILL, IBS and EMBL, fostering world-class collaborative research. The national research centres CEA and CNRS contribute significantly to breakthroughs in energy, nanotechnology and fundamental sciences.

Together with these institutions, the GIANT Innovation Campus connects research, education, and industry to drive forward technological innovation on a global scale.

♦ Grenoble – A global hub for neutron science ♦

Grenoble stands as a premier destination for neutron science, anchored by the world-renowned Institut Laue-Langevin. Its neutron science is reinforced by major national research institutions such as the CEA and CNRS. Within the CEA, advanced materials and energy studies benefit from neutron-based techniques, while CNRS laboratories like the Néel Institute and the Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses (LNCMI) lead pioneering work in condensed matter physics. The interdisciplinary Laboratory of Physics (LiPhy) adds further depth, bridging biology, soft matter, and statistical physics. Together, these institutions create an unparalleled environment for innovation and discovery in neutron science.

The perfect time to celebrate Neutrons in Europe

♦ 70 years of Neutrons in Grenoble ♦

Erwin Félix Lewy-Bertaut (1916-2003)
Louis Eugène Félix Néel (1904-2000)

« Here I open a parenthesis on the early history of CEN-G (Centre d’Etudes Nucléaires de Grenoble), directed by Louis Néel since 1956, and our relations with USA scientists. My first contact with neutrons was in 1957 when, visiting the BNL […]. Wally Koehler, from Oak Ridge, spent some months in Grenoble during 1956 and 1957 to learn about domain effects in magnetic alloys. […] The Grenoble reactor, called Melusine, diverged in June 1958 and Lester Corliss came over to spend his sabbatical leave in Grenoble. »   E.F. Bertaut

♦ 60 years of neutron science at the ILL ♦

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is today a cornerstone of the European neutron ecosystem in a period of transition.
Having completed its extensive Endurance upgrade programme (2016-2024), the ILL is a state-of-the-art, unique facility in all respects: source, instruments, support facilities, know-how, which is promising many scientific discoveries in the years to come.
Bringing the European Neutron Community to Grenoble is the right way to celebrate 60 years of excellent neutron science and technology!
