The perfect place to celebrate Neutron in Europe

♦ Grenoble – An international research and inovation ecosystem

From the 19th century to the present day, Grenoble’s long-standing tradition of partnerships between research, higher education, and industry has helped shape the emergence of hydroelectricity, industry-transforming developments in mechanical engineering, and advances in nanotechnologies.

At the heart of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (France’s 2nd-largest economic region and the 8th largest in Europe) and 5 leading centers of excellence (pôle de compétivité) Minalogic, Lyonbiopôle, Tenerrdis, Axelera, and CIMES, the Grenoble metropolitan area is today one of the most innovative regions in Europe.

The perfect time to celebrate Neutrons in Europe

♦ 70 years of Neutrons in Grenoble

« Here I open a parenthesis on the early history of CEN-G (Centre d’Etudes Nucléaires de Grenoble), directed by Louis Néel since 1956, and our relations with USA scientists. My first contact with neutrons was in 1957 when, visiting the BNL […]. Wally Koehler, from Oak Ridge, spent some months in Grenoble during 1956 and 1957 to learn about domain effects in magnetic alloys. […] The Grenoble reactor, called Melusine, diverged in June 1958 and Lester Corliss came over to spend his sabbatical leave in Grenoble. »   E.F. Bertaut

♦ 60th anniversary of the ILL

The ILL is today a cornerstone of the European neutron ecosystem in a period of transition.

Having completed its extensive Endurance upgrade programme (2016-2024), the ILL is a state-of-the-art, unique facility in all respects: source,
instruments, support facilities, know-how, which is promising many scientific discoveries in the years to come.

Bringing the European Neutron Community to Grenoble is the right way to celebrate 60 years of excellent neutron science and technology!

A THRILLING PROGRAM

The program will reflect both recent developments in neutron scattering techniques and the wide range of scientific topics where neutron scattering in an essential tool.

Scientific fields:

  • Electronic phenomena and quantum materials
  • Soft matter, life sciences and health
  • Materials engineering and chemistry
  • Universe essentials and Society
  • Neutron methods and tools

The present and future neutron ecosystem will be discussed as part of the plenary sessions.

Time will be provided for the ENSA prize lectures.

The (5-tier) parallel session will include 2-3 invited speakers and up to 4 presentations selected from the abstracts, aiming to provide optimal diversity.

Abstracts and other conference materials will be made available on the conference website and in a conference app accessible to all participants attending the conference.

ANCHORING ECNS 2027 INTO THE LOCAL DYNAMICS

Grenoble is known as Capital of the Alps and awarded Green capital 2022 by the EU, recognising a coherent and ambitious ecological
transition policy.

  • Carbon-free energy production (‘Houille Blanche’) is part of Grenoble’s DNA.
  • Early awareness of climatic challenges (‘Berceau de la paleoglaciologie’).
  • The importance on energy research (e.g. via CEA Grenoble).

Neutron scattering is essential to explore, energy materials, hydrogen storage and fuel cells, catalysts, more sustainable materials and processes, and more…

We thus propose a conference combining scientific excellence with societal impact awareness, around the themes of climate change and the energy transition

  • Immersing of the conference participants in the local dynamics, with a pool of optional activities bringing lasting and inspiring impressions
  • Sharing our positive impact on scientific and societal challenges with the general public

Social events – lasting and inspiring impressions

  • Glacier tour
  • Climate observation station
  • Hydroelectric power production
  • Neutrons@Grenoble celebrations

Visits of local research infrastructure

A THRILLING PROGRAM… WITH PUBLIC SCIENCE

We will share the impact of research using neutrons with the general public through high-profile public lectures and an open day at the conference venue addressing the most important societal challenges of our times.

Open day

An open day providing access to the exhibition area including industrial exhibitors, representatives of neutron facilities and scientific highlights, selected by an advisory board.

Evening session with public talks

Public talks with leading experts in the field(s) to build a bridge between a general audience, international scientists and neutron research:

  • Paleo-glaciology and climate change research talk
  • Neutron science talk
